Island City Stage’s (ICS) 15th season (they grow up so fast!) promises to be a good one. They open with the return of a favorite, “Who Killed Joan Crawford?” and then “Broadway Barbara’s Holiday Spectacular.”
They start the New Year with the popular Broadway musical, “Grey Gardens”. That’s followed by the deeply moving “Paper Cut” and the super-satirical “Messy White Gays.” The season ends with James Goldman‘s comedic tragedy, “The Lion in Winter.” For dates and ticket information, including how to buy a FlexPass and get bargain-priced seats, go to IslandCityStage.org. The cherry on the top of this cake is that ICS will be awarded the Bill von Maurer Award, presented by the Carbonell Awards to a “theater company that exemplifies excellence by the totality of its programming: productions, educational outreach, developmental programs, and audiences served.” A much-deserved recognition.

SEE FOOD
Chef Diego Oka, who led La Mar’s celebrated Brickell Key location throughout its 11-year run, will bring several of the restaurant’s most beloved dishes to Jarana at Aventura. La Mar Nights will take place Saturdays, Sept. 19 through Oct. 10. The experience begins with complimentary chips and ají amarillo sauce, followed by a daily amuse-bouche and a three-course tasting menu.
The first course offers up family-style portions of: beet causa with king crab, avocado, smoked trout roe, huancaína sauce, cherry tomato, and quail egg; tiradito lujoso - Japanese hamachi with blue crab chalaca, avocado, smoked trout roe, radish, and roasted peppers; and ceviche chifa — Peruvian trout with pickled vegetables, cilantro, scallions, sesame oil, peanuts, and crispy noodles.
The second course consists of individual portions of Oka’s take on the classic Conchita, featuring two grilled jumbo scallops with 24-month-aged Parmesan, Parmesan foam, lime, and garlic crumbs.
For the third course, the service returns to family style: bucatini with grouper, calamari, octopus, and shrimp in a chupe sauce with rocoto, tomatoes, and huacatay; a 1.5-pound crispy, deboned, whole yellowtail snapper, chicharrón drizzled with Nikkei sauce and served with white chaufa rice.
The experience is $90 per person, and reservations are required. Call 786-840-8840.
OPENING SOON
Taking over the space formerly occupied by New York Grilled Cheese, Mar y Tierra will showcase Peruvian cuisine. For those not in the know, Peruvian cuisine features influences from Latin America, as you might expect. However, there is a very large Japanese population in Peru and that cuisine is also quite dominant. Mar y Tierra is remodeling the place. You may have already noticed the colorful murals on the outside. The interior art is still in progress. Expect to see such Peruvian staples as ceviche, lomo saltado, and arroz con mariscos. For more information, call 786-670-6074.
