Down and back up. Down and back up. Breathe. Repeat until you can’t do it anymore.
It’s time for The Pet Project For Pets’ annual Push-ups For Pets. The event is Oct. 5 at 3 p.m. at Hunters in Wilton Manors. Teams of five will compete to see who is the Push-up Queen or King of Wilton Manors.
The rules are pretty simple: do as many push-ups as you can without getting up. Pet Project Executive Director Sue Martino said there’s no time limit. Participants can pause and catch their breath as long as they don’t get out of the basic push-up position.
So, what makes a perfect push-up?
Brian Rozler, an instructor at Peak Fitness, has a few tips.
“The first thing you want to do is get your hands on the floor with your feet about shoulder width apart. Then, bring your arms down to a 45 degree,” he said.
The record is about 150.
If endurance is the goal, Rozler says the key is to remember to breathe.
“The way that you fight fatigue in this is just to take a deep breath through your nose and out through your mouth. Get your elbows to a 45-degree angle, get as low as you can and know that the lower you go, the stronger you get.”
Teams are expected to raise at least $1,000 each, and the money goes towards the Pet Project’s mission of helping people and pets stay together during tough times.
The top team and the top contestant will get prizes.
