When presented with a budget, Florida’s governor can pick and choose what he likes and veto the rest. This year, he took aim at Wilton Manors and the city’s safety.
He effectively canceled one million dollars in funding for the Wilton Manors Transparency in Public Safety Project. City Manager Leigh Ann Henderson told the Gazette the money was set to buy and install security cameras at city buildings, parks, and other areas. The goal is to deter crime.
Henderson says the city is not deterred. “We are still able to move forward with our planned security projects for this year.”
However, she says the city won't accomplish the installation of other cameras that were to be funded through the appropriation. They will seek state or federal funds again for that project.
This is just one of millions of dollars in cuts he made to the budget, which were already approved by the Republican majority.
Tens of millions were slashed from arts and culture appropriations. Dozens of organizations including Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida, Master Chorale, Island City Stage and more.
