There is something about a hotel that transports you to another time that makes a getaway even more memorable, especially when that destination combines nostalgia, comfort, and a little bit of fun. For my husband, Sebastian, and me, Universal Cabana Bay Beach Resort has become one of those places we genuinely look forward to visiting whenever our travels take us to Orlando. Inspired by the colorful architecture and carefree vacation culture of the 1950s and 1960s, the resort offers a playful escape from everyday life, complete with retro décor, inviting accommodations, and enough activities to make spending time at the hotel just as enjoyable as exploring the nearby theme parks.

We recently returned to Cabana Bay during a visit to Universal Orlando Resort, where we had been invited to experience Halloween Horror Nights, and the stay reminded us why we have continued to enjoy this property throughout the years. While the haunted houses, immersive scares, and excitement of the event certainly kept us entertained, there was something especially nice about returning to a familiar hotel after a long evening of exploring the parks. Having visited Cabana Bay several times before, we already knew what to expect, but that familiarity is part of its appeal. It is comfortable, welcoming, and filled with little details that continue to make us smile.

A Little Vintage Magic in the Heart of Orlando

One of the things I have always appreciated about Cabana Bay is how fully it embraces its retro personality without feeling outdated. From the moment guests arrive, the resort's sweeping architecture, colorful furnishings, and mid-century modern details create an atmosphere reminiscent of classic American vacations, when roadside resorts, poolside afternoons, and family road trips were part of the adventure. I have always been drawn to places that tell a story through their design, and Cabana Bay manages to capture that sense of nostalgia while still offering the conveniences travelers expect today.

The lobby is particularly charming, with its bright colors, vintage-inspired seating, and spacious design that immediately sets the mood for a fun getaway. Throughout the property, that same attention to detail continues, creating a setting that feels cheerful and welcoming rather than overly elaborate. Whether we are checking in for a weekend of theme park adventures or enjoying a little downtime between activities, Sebastian and I love how easy it is to settle into the resort's atmosphere and simply enjoy being there.

Of course, part of the fun of staying at Cabana Bay is discovering the different places to relax and enjoy a bite to eat or a cocktail. The Swizzle Lounge, located near the lobby, is one of my favorite spots, especially because I appreciate a good Old Fashioned or martini after a busy day. With its vintage-inspired atmosphere and classic cocktail selections, the lounge offers a comfortable place to unwind, catch up on the day's adventures, and enjoy a little time together before heading back out or calling it a night.

Another favorite is Bayliner Diner, the resort's colorful food court, where guests can enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks surrounded by nostalgic décor and vintage television advertisements. There is something amusing about watching old commercials while enjoying a casual meal, and the experience adds to the playful personality that makes Cabana Bay stand out. I also happen to love a good milkshake, and enjoying one at a resort inspired by the golden age of American vacations feels especially appropriate.

More Than Just a Hotel Stay

While Cabana Bay is certainly convenient for anyone visiting Universal Orlando, I have always believed that one of its greatest strengths is how much there is to enjoy without leaving the property. The resort features two expansive swimming pool areas, a waterslide, a lazy river, and plenty of outdoor space where guests can enjoy the Florida sunshine. Whether you are traveling with family, friends, or your significant other, it is easy to spend an afternoon relaxing by the water before getting ready for an evening of entertainment.

For those looking for something a little different, Galaxy Bowl, the hotel's 10-lane bowling alley, offers another fun option that fits perfectly with the resort's retro atmosphere. I love that the property gives guests opportunities to enjoy themselves beyond the usual hotel amenities, especially since Orlando vacations can sometimes become so focused on attractions and schedules that we forget to slow down and appreciate the places where we are staying.

The accommodations are another reason we enjoy returning. With retro-inspired furnishings, comfortable layouts, and options ranging from standard guest rooms to spacious family suites, Cabana Bay offers something for different types of travelers. The family suites, which accommodate up to six guests, feature a kitchenette and a separate living area, making them particularly convenient for families or groups who appreciate having additional space.

For Sebastian and me, having a comfortable place to return to after a long day is always important, and that was especially true during our recent Halloween Horror Nights visit. Anyone who has experienced the event knows that the evening can be filled with plenty of walking, excitement, and unexpected scares, so being able to return to a relaxing and familiar environment afterward makes the experience even better.

A Perfect Match for Halloween Horror Nights

One of the biggest advantages of staying at Cabana Bay is its location within Universal Orlando Resort, which allows guests to enjoy convenient transportation to the theme parks and Universal CityWalk. Complimentary shuttle buses make getting around easier, while eligible guests can also take advantage of Early Park Admission to select attractions at participating Universal parks.

During our latest visit, that convenience was particularly welcome because Halloween Horror Nights is one of those events where you want to experience as much as possible. Between the elaborate haunted houses, immersive environments, and overall atmosphere, it is easy to spend hours exploring everything the event has to offer. And while the scares are part of the excitement, I also appreciate having the opportunity to enjoy the event with Sebastian, especially since visiting Orlando and experiencing its attractions together has become one of our favorite ways to spend time away from home.

What I particularly enjoy about staying at Cabana Bay during a Universal getaway is that the hotel complements the experience without overwhelming it. You can enjoy a busy day at the parks, return for a little relaxation, and head back out for dinner or an evening event without feeling like you must sacrifice comfort or convenience. It creates a balance that makes the entire trip more  enjoyable, especially when you want to make the most of a weekend without feeling exhausted by the time you return home.

Why Cabana Bay Keeps Us Coming Back

Having visited a variety of hotels throughout the years, I have come to appreciate properties that offer more than simply a place to sleep. The hotels that stay with me are often the ones that have a distinct personality, create a welcoming atmosphere, and make even the smallest moments feel like part of the vacation. Cabana Bay continues to do that, combining its nostalgic charm with modern conveniences and a sense of fun that appeals to travelers of different ages and interests.

For Sebastian and me, returning to the resort has become something of a tradition, and I think that is part of what makes it special. We know we can expect a comfortable stay, enjoy the playful atmosphere, and spend time together doing things we love, whether that means exploring Universal's attractions, enjoying a cocktail, or simply relaxing after a long day. Our recent visit during Halloween Horror Nights was another reminder that sometimes the most memorable travel experiences come from returning to places that already hold wonderful memories while finding new reasons to appreciate them.

If you are planning an Orlando getaway, whether for Halloween Horror Nights, a theme park vacation, or simply a few days away from your usual routine, Universal Cabana Bay Beach Resort is worth considering. Its vintage-inspired atmosphere, entertaining amenities, comfortable accommodations, and convenient location make it a fun and welcoming choice, especially for travelers who appreciate a hotel with character.

And while Orlando continues to introduce new attractions, hotels, and experiences, there is something refreshing about returning to a property that knows exactly what makes it special. Cabana Bay has never lost the charm that first made us fall in love with it, and I suspect that the next time Sebastian and I find ourselves planning another Universal adventure, this colorful little escape will once again be near the top of our list.
