"Our Wicked Gifts" by Kathryn Foxfield.

Check out our interview with Kathryn Foxfield, the author of "Our Wicked Gifts."

What was your inspiration behind your most recent book?

Our Wicked Gifts was inspired by the TV show Succession — I loved how awful all the characters were and really wanted to write a YA version, but with magic and murder. It’s ended up part Succession, part Saltburn, part Ready or Not, and it contains all my favourite tropes: billionaires behaving badly, strange magic, melodramatic murders, and families who can’t decide if they want to kill each other or kill for each other.

What does Reading Rainbow mean to you?

To me, Reading Rainbow is all about celebrating LGBTQ+ books and remembering how important it is for everyone to feel seen in the books they read. I’ve seen firsthand how kids can just light up when they realise a book’s about someone just like them. We all need to buy, read, and recommend the books we’d like to see more of, so they keep getting published.

Why do you feel representation of a variety of people is so important when it comes to writing books?

Books give us all the opportunity to walk in someone else’s shoes for a few hours and maybe learn to be a slightly better person along the way. But the real magic is when you open a book, and instead of becoming someone else, you get to become more of yourself. Seeing yourself represented in a book can be life-changing and life-saving.

Tell us a little more about the book and why you decided to write it.

Our Wicked Gifts is about a murderous family of billionaires who sell their souls to the Devil in return for magical gifts. But when one of their victims returns from the dead, swearing vengeance, it’s up to the black sheep of the family to stop him, only she’s not sure her family are worth saving. I wanted to write about a character grappling with the realisation that her family wants her to be someone she’s not, with a whole lot of murder, mayhem, and magic thrown into the mix.

What can fans expect from your book?

Well, someone is impaled on a taxidermy stag early on in the book, and it all spirals from there. It’s a murder mystery, horror story, and treatise on surviving a toxic family, all in one. I had a lot of fun writing it and really hope it finds some equally bloodthirsty readers.

What's up next for you in the bookish world?

I’m writing another YA with magic and murder, and then who knows?
