What was your inspiration behind your most recent book?

I was scrolling TikTok one day, procrastinating, when I came across a video by one of my favorite creators (Today I Learned Science or TIL Science) and it got me thinking about how social media can be used for educational purposes and the idea for Sofia’s TikTok series, The Matildas—named after the Matilda Effect—was born.

What does Reading Rainbow mean to you?

I feel very strongly that every reader deserves to see themselves within the pages of a book. In MUTUAL DISCORD, I explored my own Puerto Rican culture, as well as what is means to be a BIPOC feminist creator in our current social climate. Yes, the book is a messy, slow burn romance, but it also highlights how women—especially Black women and queer women—continue to be marginalized and overlooked, and I wanted to shine a spotlight on that.

Why do you feel representation of a variety of people is so important when it comes to writing books?

Because my world is diverse and vibrant! My world is full of Latine people and their friends living loudly and brightly and proudly, and I wanted to show that on the page. So often Latine characters are supporting roles, but in MUTUAL DISCORD, I wanted them to be the stars…and they are!

Tell us a little more about the book and why you decided to write it.

MUTUAL DISCORD is about Sofia Mendoza, a content creator who highlights women in history who’ve had their discoveries and innovations stolen from them. When Sofia inconveniently learns that the anonymous follower she has a spark with is actually her best friend’s new boyfriend, trouble ensues! I had been flirting with the idea of writing a contemporary romance for years, and Sofia and Alex’s story allowed me an opportunity to write messy romantic and platonic relationships, and what it means to be Latine.

What can fans expect from your book?

Readers can expect a messy, slow burn romance with a side of fascinating historical figures and a vibrant showcase of Puerto Rican culture.

What's up next for you in the bookish world?

I’m returning to my historical romance roots and releasing the first book, titled RECKLESSLY YOURS, in a new historical romance series. It’s about an adventure seeking second son who butts heads with his captivating mountain guide on the slopes of the Himalayas. RECKLESSLY YOURS will be out in January!
