With almost 56% of the vote, Sarah Malega cruised to re-election for commissioner of District 1 in the March 19 municipal election in Lake Worth Beach.

Other out candidates didn’t fare so well.

First-time candidate, Nicholas Coppola, lost his election for an open seat in Delray Beach, getting 36% in a three-way race to Juli Casale, who won with 42%.

Coppola is the board chair of Compass, the LGBTQ center of Palm Beach County.

In a tight race for Town Council in Palm Beach, John David Corey got 49% losing to Bridget Moran.

Corey was also a first-time candidate and a member of the Architectural Review Commission.

In the Lake Worth Beach race for mayor, incumbent and straight ally Betty Resch got 48%, but needed to cross the 50% threshold to avoid a run-off. She now heads to the next election April 2 against Andy Amoroso, a gay man who previously served on the commission. Alex Cull, another out man who was running for mayor, came in third place with 14%.
