Jaime Johnson | Creating Space for Authenticity

For Jaime Johnson, living authentically is both a personal freedom and a way of building community.

Johnson, 41, is a transgender woman from Pompano Beach whose proudest accomplishments span service and entrepreneurship. She became Sun Empress 4 of the Imperial Sun Court and opened her own food business, Jamie’s Kitchen.

Both accomplishments reflect the values she associates with being out and proud: honesty, self-acceptance and the freedom to stop hiding. Living openly, she said, allows her to build stronger relationships and find a supportive community while affirming her own worth.

Her identity has also shaped how she moves through professional and public spaces. Johnson has encountered barriers during hiring and dealt with the assumptions placed on transgender women. She has also experienced the everyday scrutiny of people staring at her while she shops. Those moments have been difficult, but she said they strengthened her ability to advocate for herself and remain confident in her skills.

“These experiences have required me to advocate for myself, remain confident in my abilities, and persevere despite barriers.”

Personally, Johnson said her journey taught her authenticity, courage and self-acceptance. It also deepened her compassion for other people navigating judgment or exclusion. She now aims to create spaces where people feel seen, respected and valued.

Her family has been central to that confidence. Johnson said she is grateful for the support of both her biological family and her chosen family, whose acceptance helped her embrace her identity and live openly.

She is involved with the Imperial Sun Court of All Florida and the South Florida Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. Through community service, she joins a tradition of LGBTQ people using celebration, visibility and mutual support to help others.

Johnson’s message to LGBTQ youth is direct and affirming.

“Be yourself and never be afraid to embrace who you are. Know that you are worthy, deeply loved, and capable of achieving amazing things. Your light is unique—keep shining brightly, because the world is better with you in it.”

Her favorite quote offers a similar argument for courage: “Never  let the fear of striking out  keep you from playing the game you love. ”

Through community service, leadership and Jamie’s Kitchen, Johnson is creating more room for herself and others to live openly, without fear or apology.
