The Oakland Park City Commission voted unanimously on Sept. 5 to place a historical marker at the site of the first official SFAAA gay softball game at Wimberly Athletic Fields. This marks the first LGBTQ historical marker in Broward County and the first anywhere in the United States for a gay softball league.

"Oakland Park values the diversity that makes our city strong," Oakland Park Mayor Tim Lonergan said. "The South Florida Amateur Athletic Association historical marker is another way we honor the many histories that shape our community and remind everyone they are welcome here."

The announcement of the marker came during the opening of the Bats, Balls, and Family SFAAA Exhibit at the Stonewall National Museum, Archives & Library, where Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis read a proclamation making Sept. 12, 2025, SFAAA Day in Fort Lauderdale. Oakland Park and Wilton Manors bestowed proclamations on SFAAA last year.

A crowd of almost 120 local and national dignitaries, local politicians, and softball players and executives past and present filled the museum on the exhibit's opening night.

The marker comes at a time when the LGBTQ+ community is facing difficult political headwinds in the state of Florida with the erasing of rainbow art from streets and intersections, bans against drag queens reading to children, and the adoption of anti-gay legislation.

"I applaud the city of Oakland Park for recognizing that providing ‘a safe and welcoming place to be oneself’ can transform the lives of many thousands of people,” SFAAA co-founder Jim Stork said. "This fits perfectly into their motto of being ‘A Pleasant Place to Live, Work and Play.'"

The project, which was directed mainly by Stork, was privately funded and used no tax money.

The bronze historical marker will be erected at the site later in the year.

The SFAAA exhibit at Stonewall runs until Nov. 2.
