When the city of Oakland Park agreed to sell the now-former city hall and other properties to build the Horizon project in 2022, many if not most assumed it would be close to finished by now. Four years later, the city still owns the properties and the buildings still stand. At the city commission meeting on Oct. 7, another change was made to the agreement.
Commissioners unanimously passed the 18th amendment to the agreement, which changes escrow accounts. Fidelity National Title
Insurance Company will now hold the $900,000 (plus interest) of non-refundable deposits made by the developer, Falcone Group. The money will be applied to the purchase at closing or go to the city if the deal falls through.
Goren, Cherof, Doody & Ezrol, P.A. was the previous custodians of the escrow account.
In late spring, developers changed up design plans to have less parking inside the mixed use development. That delayed the closing and had some residents privately worrying that the project was in jeopardy. However, shortly after Independence Weekend, the new plan was submitted and approved.
Horizon is expected to have 311 housing units and 21,000 square feet of commercial space.
The new closing date is set for Nov. 10.
