Sister Christian, oh the time has come... for you to relive a classic movie on the stage. “The Wedding Singer” bows this weekend at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts. Like its cinematic progenitor, the play is filled with heart and songs that will have you singing along through the final curtain calls.
Local crooner Alexander Zenoz stars as Robbie Hart (Adam Sandler’s role in the film) who makes a career celebrating other people’s love while lacking one of his own.
“It’s truly a spectacle,” Zenoz said. “It’s wonderful.”
The stage version has plenty of oldies (yes, ‘80s and ‘90s hits are now old) that will have Gen Xers and Millennials lipsynching along. Even Zenoz admits this is more than a typical show.
“I would definitely get your tickets to this concert. I mean musical.”
There are plenty of top 10 songs, as well as the movie’s original tune. “There’s the iconic one from the movie, ‘I Wanna Grow Old With You.’ He’s building up to this one song. He’s always a singer-songwriter.”
Telling a story on a stage is different from telling a story through cinema. Zenoz says he’s up to the task.
“One of my special talents, I feel like, is to engage the audience and reaching out. I think that a lot of theater actors are taught to stop at the fourth wall. I try not to stop there and think about who’s seeking connection in this moment.”
Mastering the vocals is one thing. Mastering the look is another. Robbie Hart’s look is very late-20th century New Jersey. Although Zenoz still sports a luxuriously thick head of hair, he’ll need to wig out for the role.
“I think I can get some extensions put in for sure,” he joked. “Business in the front but party in the back.”
The show runs through Feb. 14, and tickets are available at TheCenterCS.com/Events.
