In our 20s, deciding between Absolute and Stoli can be among the biggest choices we face. We do our due diligence to see which is best for us and move on.
As we get older, there are many more consequential choices to be researched and decided. Which doctor is good for me as a member of the LGBTQ community? How do I choose a specialist? Which pharmacy should I choose?
Add in insurance and Medicare/Medicaid questions, and it can quickly become confusing.
Help has arrived.
Saturday, Oct. 19, The Pride Center at Equality Park will host the 15th annual Active Aging Expo.
“It’s a one-stop shop to know who the LGBTQ-competent providers of goods and services are,” Bruce Williams, The Pride Center’s Active Aging Manager, said.
Sixty or more service providers, ranging from long-term care agencies to the venerable AARP, to Our Fund Foundation will be there to answer questions and explain options.
Our Fund may strike you as an unlikely participant. But Our Fund’s executive director, David Jobin, says the Active Aging Expo fits neatly into their mission.
“Because of circumstances resulting from the less likelihood of having adult children in their lives, LGBTQ elders are more vulnerable to some of the negative effects of isolation,” Jobin said. “So any time The Our Fund Foundation can put our support behind efforts to lift up South Florida’s LGBTQ elder population, we are eager to do so. The Aging Expo brings together resources in the community that can not only improve — but also save and extend the lives of our most valuable resource — our elders.”
The event is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Pride Center. The first 400 attendees will get lunch, which is scheduled to include ham and turkey sandwiches, fruit cups, and a drink.
The food tends to go quickly. Williams says the event has sold out for at least the last decade, and that some supporters, including Broward Health, have been with the expo since the beginning.
