In a span of just three hours at two events, SunServe honored its roots and its future.
It all went down Nov. 6 across Fort Lauderdale.
The Apogee Awards were created by the South Florida Business & Wealth (SFBW) magazine “to recognize distinguished C-Suite leaders whose dedication to their industries and communities deserves esteemed recognition.”
SunServe CEO Tony Lima was honored with the Excellence In Leadership Nonprofit Award. Lima has led the organization through a renaissance over the past three years. From the creation of their annual Shine Gala to increased visibility at the AIDS Walk to helping open a home for LGBTQ youth trying to get on their feet, Lima has been a hard charging change agent for SunServe and the community.
The awards ceremony was at the recently renovated War Memorial at Holiday Park. Hundreds of South Florida business luminaries were in the room while a DJ kept up the vibe. Lima, surrounded by his team, was very excited.
The Apogees are not an LGBTQ-centric awards presentation. This is the latest example of how SunServe works with, and reaches out to, the broader community to make change in South Florida.
Senior Moment
Earlier in the evening, Lima and the SunServe team celebrated old-school.
The Noble A. McArtor Senior Day Center marked its 20th anniversary with a party at its home on the campus of Sunshine Cathedral. Snacks and drinks were served as people mingled and celebrated the center’s accomplishments. The day care helps people with dementia or with multiple ADLs.
Lisa Peters is SunServe’s Director of Senior Services and runs the Day Care. She has long been an advocate-ally for the LGBTQ senior community. This year, she was nominated for Best Straight Ally in the OutSFL Your Choice Awards.
