The block is about to get rocked.
Emeli Sandé is coming to Wilton Manors this weekend for a mid-winter street party. Rock the Block is back for its second year and has another top tier queer headliner.
Sandé was once married to a man. Now she’s in a relationship with a woman. She eschews labels and simply loves whom she loves. Last year’s show featured “American Idol” runner-up David Archuleta, another queer artist (ex-Mormon) who is learning to find comfort in his own skin.
HarmonyWaves’ Gary Van Horn said there is intention in choosing performers. “It’s a showcase of people who are living and being authentic.”
The "Next To Me" singer will be joined by Alexander Zenoz, Stefano May, Ry Rivers, DJ Itty Bitty, and Rubby Octavius. The legendary TP Lords will host the night.
Van Horn says this will be part of Sandé’s first trip to the U.S. since the pandemic.
“We wanted to find an artist that brings something different to WM. She’s speaking from the heart. Being part of the community is something we like to highlight.”
Wilton Drive will be closed all day Saturday from NE 21st Court to NE Sixth Ave. The event space opens about 6 p.m. Suggested donation is $10 in advance or $20 at the gate.
VIP is at the former Sushi Rock location, with food provided by Apt. 9f and drinks by Hunters Nightclub.
