Cleveland Clinic Weston is now home to Broward County’s first health clinic designed exclusively to serve the needs of LGBTQ patients. Cleveland Clinic says compassionate care will be at the forefront of the clinic. Dr. Patrick McLendon serves as the Medical Director alongside a team of healthcare professionals who will provide primary care and specialty care.
“So far, the response to the LGBTQ+ Clinic has been overwhelmingly positive,” McClendon said. “There is a lot of excitement both within Cleveland Clinic and across the community about the launch. We’ve been very fortunate to have the support of local politicians and leaders in the LGBTQ+ community.”
The recent ribbon-cutting ceremony at the start of the year saw a larger-than-expected crowd, with support from some local politicians.
“Many individuals have come to establish general primary and preventive care, addressing common health concerns such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, bone and joint health, and oral and injectable PrEP regimens,” said McClendon. “Our goal is to provide comprehensive care that meets the needs of the LGBTQ+ community, ensuring that every patient receives the attention and support they deserve for their overall health and well-being, regardless of their gender, sexual orientation, or identity.”
LGBTQ patients can have better health outcomes when they can receive care from a provider who understands their unique needs. Patients can also feel more comfortable and more likely to seek treatment in a safe space.
But 1 in 3 LGBTQ+ adults say they were treated unfairly by a healthcare worker, more than double compared to non-LGBTQ+ adults, according to a KFF report released in 2024.
“It’s inspiring to see a major healthcare provider like Cleveland Clinic taking the lead in prioritizing these underserved populations,” said Community Advocate and Consultant Terry Dyer. “This can pave the way for similar initiatives nationwide, fostering both awareness and action toward inclusivity in healthcare.”
“We have good momentum and support from the onset, and I’m very excited to help grow this clinic over the coming years!” said McClendon.
The LGBTQ+ Clinic is on the ground level at Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital, at 3100 Weston Road, Weston, FL 33331. It will be open Thursdays from 1-4 p.m. and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
