A New Year embrace turned into a heartbreaking goodbye. Angel Nunes was outside with his partner, Chris Dillon, when a stray bullet hit and killed him.

The two were on Dillon’s pool deck in the 700 block of NE 17th Ct. The shooting happened on the Wilton Manors side of the river, but the Fort Lauderdale Police Department is leading the investigation.

“He says, ‘I didn’t want you to spend New Year’s Eve by yourself,” Dillon told WPLG. “And if I didn’t love him before, I certainly loved him after that statement.”

As of Monday evening, no arrests or suspects have been announced.

Illegal fireworks and firing live ammunition are, for some reason, part of New Year festivities. While there is no centralized database tracking death and injury from stray bullets, Ammo.com says 34 Americans were killed by stray bullets from Jan. 1-Sept. 25, 2024.

Anyone with information about Nunes’ death, please contact Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS or BrowardCrimeStoppers.org.

Editor's note: Some outlets have reported Angel's last name spelled as Nunez. We chose to go with Nunes following the lead of the Sun-Sentinel.
