Sarah Leonardi has won a new term representing District 3 on the Broward County School Board, and in the end, it wasn’t even close.
The incumbent won 70% of the vote in Tuesday’s election over opponent Jason Loring.
“I’m really grateful for everyone in District 3 for giving me another opportunity to serve,” she said as returns came in, and it became clear she would win reelection.
The race took on an unusual dynamic, pitting Leonardi, a long time LGBTQ ally, against Loring, a member of the LGBTQ community.
Loring is a member of the Log Cabin Republicans, a group of conservative LGBTQ people.
That group often has views that go against the beliefs of most of the LGBTQ community. Loring’s campaign website didn’t explicitly espouse any of these opinions, although some would say there were ‘dog whistles’ alluding to a conservative philosophy.
Loring declined comment on the election results.
Leonardi has long supported LGBTQ students and families. She found herself in a controversy after a regular, routine field trip to Rosie’s in Wilton Manors. The LGBTQ owned restaurant hosted a group of students learning life skills, such as how to order and pay at a restaurant.
The trip happened before the restaurant was open, and the children were given a kid friendly menu. Despite that, conservatives didn’t care and pounced on the restaurant, school, and Leonardi.
The routine field trip went viral on social media, with conservative media outlets eventually picking up the story and adding fuel to the fire. Many of those outlets described Rosie’s as a “gay bar” purposely misleading their audiences.
