Lady Bunny’s been a queer icon for decades. From stage to screen to the clubs of Wilton Manors, she’s a fixture of LGBTQ culture. Now, just days before a big event in South Florida, her political positions are drawing controversy.
She is not a fan of Vice President Kamala Harris’ bid for president, and is saying so on social media.
“Kamala supporters are voting for potluck,” she wrote. “She's an empty vessel for corporate interests — just like Hillary, just like Republicans. But she's got a pride mug for sale in her online store!”
Lady Bunny makes it clear she’s not a Republican, or in favor of corporate capitalism. But her comments are rankling the feathers of LGBTQ and Democrats in general. At the same time, she’s not holding back.
“In a CNN debate [in 2020], she claimed she supported [Medicare for all], and then changed her position the very next day. Shameless. I guess she learned from serving as VP under Biden: you can't break promises if you don't make any promises.”
The remarks come as she prepares to be honored as Pridelines’ National Icon Honoree at their gala, Queerferno A Disco Masquerade, on Aug. 17.
Pridelines Executive Director Edward Summers is aware of her remarks, but says she’s been told Queerferno is a night of celebrating community and accomplishments, not politics.
“Pridelines is a 501(c)(3) organization and doesn't endorse any political candidates. Lady Bunny is being honored not for her political stance, but for what she’s done for our community. We do not support any statements that she’s making, but we recognize the contributions she’s made to the LGBTQ+ community.”
Harris replaced President Joe Biden at the top of the ticket last month after his doddering debate performance. GOP nominee and former president Donald Trump was pulling ahead in the polls. Since she joined the race, Harris has pulled even or slightly ahead in national and swing state polls.
