It was a night of celebration, fun, and joy. The second annual Mizz Out South Florida pageant saw five of the most talented South Florida drag queens show off their unique skills, and a grateful crowd was there for it.
The competition went down at Aquaplex on Oakland Park Blvd.
Velvet Lenore won the crown, but it wasn’t easy. She was competing alongside Leila Cox, Angie Ovahness, Tayanna Love, and Lupita Hollywood.
The Presentation category theme was Pride. Three wore bright red for reasons ranging from fierceness to a memorial for those no longer with us. Two were in full rainbow regalia and had the crowd from the moment they stepped on stage.
For talent, there was live singing, dance routines with sexy backup dancers, and a show-stopping rendition of Defying Gravity from “Wicked.” It literally stopped the show. The smoke machines went into overdrive and set off the fire alarms. Fire Rescue showed up to make sure everything was okay. They received a round of applause for their work, and that was the end of any smoky special effects for the night.
The question and answer category gave contestants a chance to express what their community means to them. From working with chronically homeless LGBTQ to bringing happiness through the art of drag, the queens showed their connection to the simultaneously wonderful and dangerous world we inhabit.
The night was a prelude to OutSFL’s gala this Thursday at The Venue.
Tickets are still available at flockfestevents.org.
