Jinkx Monsoon is well aware that Florida is a hot mess. Sure there are hurricanes, oppressive heat, and the ubiquitous “Florida Man.” But it was Florida’s political environment that almost canceled the South Florida stop on her Everything At Stake tour.
She took the stage at Coral Springs Center for the Arts on July 24, the “RuPaul’s Drag Race” alum minced no words about political attacks on the LGBTQ community in general and drag entertainment specifically. Knowing she was nowhere near the gayborhood, she welcomed Wilton Manors to Coral Springs.
FayWhat?!, host of The FayWhat?! Show on Happening Out Television, was in the audience, and said Jinkx dropped a bombshell announcement, saying, “People are surprised that I picked this theater. Miami and Broward both pulled out. Both canceled on me.”
“I was shocked that she said that,” FayWhat?! said.
Gov. Ron DeSantis and his henchmen in Tallahassee have been waging a war of intimidation against drag entertainment for more than a year. The Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) has launched investigations into venues in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Orange counties.
This year the Republican super majority passed a law that appears to classify drag as adult entertainment. A federal judge has put that law on hold, saying it’s likely unconstitutional.
But the chilling effect is scaring venues that are worried about having their liquor licenses revoked. Before the law was paused, many events, including Prides, either canceled entirely or banned drag entertainment.
If you didn’t see her show this time around, it could be awhile before you have another chance. This holiday season, she’s doing a Christmas tour with fellow drag superstar BenDeLaCreme. As of now, no Florida dates are on their schedule.
