Labor Day weekend at the beach is for everyone. Hotdogs, laying in the sand, and splashy fun are all part of the package. Once again, SunServe opened the door to inclusion by holding its annual Transgender Body Positive Beach Bash.

Too often, trans people don’t feel comfortable in beachwear or getting in the water. At best, society is indifferent. At worst, society actively makes public life uncomfortable for trans.

SunServe, which focuses on the intersection of mental health and trans issues, makes sure that for one day in one place, trans people rule. Traditionally, the water park/beach (which has asked to remain anonymous for the safety of staff and guests) includes LGBTQ staff, making the day as welcoming as one would hope.

“The SunServe Transgender Body Positive Beach Bash 2024 was truly magical this year,” Misty “Eyez” Alicea, SunServe’s Director of Transgender Services, said. “It was incredible to see our community come together, celebrate each other, and create a safe, joyful space where everyone felt empowered and loved. Moments like these remind us of the strength and beauty within our transgender community.”

Funding for the event has been tough in recent years. This year, AHF Pharmacy and FLUX stepped up to support the event.

Tiffany Arieagus, SunServe’s Community Engagement Ambassador, said the Beach Bash is a great example of the outreach and events that SunServe supports throughout the year.

The joy and connection we witnessed on the beach were powerful reminders of why we continue to advocate and provide for our transgender community every day.”
