There’s something exciting about walking into a comic shop and finding a first issue that makes you want to follow a whole new team. If you missed DC’s September launches of Legion of Super-Heroes, Teen Titans, and The Doom Patrol, you’re getting another chance: all three debut issues return to comic shops Nov. 4 with new cover art.

The three series have very different kinds of trouble waiting for their heroes. In Legion of Super-Heroes #1, writer Joshua Williamson and artist Hayden Sherman take us a thousand years into the future, where superheroes are outlawed and worlds are at war. After a murder threatens one of the universe’s last hopes, a group of gifted young rebels may be the only ones who can change what comes next.

Teen Titans #1, from writer Kyle Higgins and artist Daniele Di Nicuolo, begins with a missing friend. The search brings Fairplay, Cheshire Cat, Proxy, and Wildcard together with Red Hood, whose approach to being a hero is very different from theirs. I’m especially curious about that tension: what happens when people need each other’s help but cannot agree on where to draw the line?

Then there’s The Doom Patrol #1, written by Darcy Van Poelgeest with art by Niko Henrichon. The team is short on money and takes a missing-cat case to keep its heroes-for-hire business going. Of course, a simple job for the Doom Patrol does not stay simple for long. Between the oddball premise and the promise of something much bigger, this one might be the most fun to pick up without knowing where it’s headed.

I love that these books give longtime fans a reason to revisit familiar teams while offering curious readers a place to begin. And if you’re someone who chooses a comic by its cover, the second printings give you a few more to admire. Whether your favorite heroes are young rebels, reluctant teammates, or the wonderfully strange, there’s a first issue here waiting for you.
