Celebrate Pride Month With Our Top LGBTQ Movie Picks | WATCH

  • ‘Pride’ Leads the Way

To celebrate Pride Month, OutSFL Entertainment Reporter Gregg Shapiro and veteran entertainment journalist John Hayden have picked their favorite LGBTQ movies. We will bring you their reviews every week in June.

John Hayden: Happy Pride! When you need a break from the sweltering parades and parties, you can still get your Pride on watching LGBTQ movies in sweet, cool, air-conditioned comfort. We have some recommendations.

Gregg Shapiro: Our first movie is, appropriately, “Pride,” the 2014 film. I love this movie for so many reasons. It highlights “the can do, carry on spirit” of British teamwork and how they overcome the seemingly insurmountable obstacle. In this case, it’s a gay and lesbian group of activists who want to raise money for the striking miners in 1984. It incorporates an HIV/AIDS storyline which is still relevant today.

Even though it’s often very funny, I still find myself sobbing as the credits roll. I can’t recommend this movie enough.

JH: The miners were striking across Great Britain, but not in London, where detached politicians were making decisions. A group of London gays picks a small town to raise and donate money to support miners, another group that is either overlooked or looked down upon.

Like in America, unions were under attack. After World War II, the labor movement in England was very strong. Soldiers came back from the war but were not about to take shit. In Pride, you see the tension in the small town: do they take help from a bunch of poofters? And it's the women who get the homophobic men to get over themselves!

GS: Please, whatever you do, make it a point this Pride month to watch this movie.
