'90s Horror and Me: Why ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Still Gives Me Life | Opinion

There’s something oddly comforting about a masked killer, a group of teens with secrets, and a phone ringing with that bone-chilling line: “Do you like scary movies?”

For me, horror films from the '90s are more than just cult classics, but they’re personal time machines to a simpler era. A time when Friday afternoons in San Juan, Puerto Rico meant school was out, and I was on my way to the movie theater with my closest friends, giggling with excitement and maybe just a little fear as we lined up to watch "Scream" or "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and other movies that might have just given us the best jump scares that at times led to laughter.

Back then, horror was a kind of therapy. During those times of teenage stress, school drama, and the uncertainty of growing up, these slasher flicks were my escape hatch.

They weren’t just scary, but they were fun, stylish, and brilliantly over-the-top. And they became a deep part of my love for film, sparked by movie dates with my late grandfather and uncle, both of whom introduced me to the magic of cinema. Watching horror and other films with them became a way to bond, to feel safe in the adrenaline rush of something fun, creative and thrilling.

Now, decades later, that same joy lives on. Even if reboots don’t capture the exact spirit of the originals, to me, they are perfect, because they keep the legacy alive.

That is why I’m absolutely thrilled to head back to the theater tomorrow to see the newest iteration of "I Know What You Did Last Summer." Yes, the fisherman killer is back. Yes, there are new secrets, a fresh cast alongside original favorite characters, and a whole new generation of scream-worthy twists.

But for those of us who were there the first time, it’s not just about what’s coming, but it’s simply about remembering who we were when it all began.

Want to join in on the fear-fest? The new "I Know What You Did Last Summer" hits theaters tomorrow. And I for one, have my ticket and cannot wait!

So, grab your popcorn, text your group chat, and gather your crew. It is time for a little scary fun, and for some of us, smiles that come from memories and nostalgic experiences.

And, we would not have it any other way. For more information and to get tickets, visit www.sony.com.
