When Pop Culture Slays: Why 'K-Pop Demon Hunters' Winning the Oscar Matters | Opinion

Every once in a while, a movie win at the Oscars feels bigger than the award itself.

That’s exactly how I felt watching "K-Pop Demon Hunters" take home the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

A film about a K-pop girl group secretly fighting demons while performing for screaming fans sounds like the kind of story that would live happily in the world of fandom and animation lovers. Instead, it ended up on one of Hollywood’s biggest stages.

And I have to admit, I loved it. And it became the comfort movie that I needed during a time of loss and uncertainty.

As someone who teaches storytelling and spends a lot of time thinking about the way pop culture shapes the world around us, I’m always fascinated by the stories that capture people’s imagination.

"K-Pop Demon Hunters" does exactly that. It’s colorful, playful, a little chaotic in the best way, and completely unapologetic about its inspiration.

The film embraces the energy of K-pop culture, the music, the fandom, the larger-than-life performances, while weaving in fantasy and mythology.

On the surface it’s wildly entertaining. But underneath all the neon lights and action scenes is something deeper: a story about friendship, identity, and the pressure that comes with living in the spotlight.

In other words, it’s the kind of story that resonates far beyond animation.

For me, the Oscar win also felt like a celebration of something I talk about often with my students: pop culture matters.

The stories we watch, the music we listen to and the characters we connect with all reflect how the world is changing.

For years, Korean pop culture has been reshaping global entertainment. From music charts to television to fashion, the influence of K-pop is impossible to ignore. "K-Pop Demon Hunters" leaned fully into that cultural moment rather than trying to make it smaller or easier to explain.

Audiences responded, and now the Academy did too.

There’s also something refreshing about seeing a bold, imaginative animated film take center stage at the Oscars.

Animation has always been one of the most creative spaces in storytelling. It allows filmmakers to take risks, blend genres, and build worlds that feel limitless.

And sometimes those risks pay off.

A movie about demon-fighting pop stars probably wasn’t what many people expected to see holding an Oscar.

But that’s the beauty of storytelling, the most unexpected ideas often end up being the most memorable.

"K-Pop Demon Hunters" might be about battling demons, but its biggest victory may be showing just how powerful global storytelling has become.

And honestly?

I’ll always root for a story that’s fearless enough to be exactly what it wants to be.
