The Community Affairs Advisory Board (CAAB) in Wilton Manors is getting three new faces. At their meeting on Aug. 22, the city commission filled the four vacancies created by expiring terms.
Ten candidates, including all four members on expiring terms, vied for the four positions. Of the four incumbents, only one, Curtis Fedder, was reappointed. New faces joining the board are Glenn Jenkins, Gene Stinson, and Justin Gladney.
CAAB acts as a conduit between the city and its residents. They recommend ideas for city projects and support community events by giving financial support, participating in, or fully producing.
Two CAAB members in particular were under heightened scrutiny during the meeting. During public comments, Carvelle Estriplet was called out by Julian Cavazos -- he mentioned their long running feud, which has included legal action and accusations of harassment. She did not reference the issue during her Q&A by commissioners, and they didn’t pursue more details.
Michael Sansevero was also denied a new term. He often disagrees with city policies and makes his views known on social media. Commissioner Don D’Armino asked if he thinks that sends a bad message to the community. Sansevero said he makes those comments as a private citizen, and that volunteer board members aren’t, or shouldn’t be, required to be in lockstep.
New terms begin Sept. 1. CAAB meets the first Monday of the month.
