Wilton Manors proudly boasts, “Life’s just better here.” Now the city is showing the world what it has to offer. Hundreds gathered on the city’s Rainbow Bridge on April 25 for a video shoot promoting the Island City.

It’s all part of Wilton’s bid to be named an All-American City. Wilton is a finalist for the title, awarded by the National Civic League. The presentation will be made in Denver the first week of June.

On this day, about 500 people gathered on the bridge as a drone hovered overhead. Producers got everyone looking in the right direction, and gave the crowd slogans to shout at the camera. “Life’s just better here,” and “Everyone is welcome,” were shouted followed by sustained applause.

The temperature was perfect, the sky was sunny, and the crowd enthusiastic. Buzz has been building since the city announced it was a finalist, and the energy that afternoon was over the top. Leaders of organizations, average citizens, and even people who live outside the city showed up to support.

Wilton became a finalist thanks to community initiatives including the Safe Space program and the city’s Sustainability program. Other factors included the vibrant downtown/A&E District, and inclusivity.

“As a city representing the LGBTQ+ community, a traditionally underserved population, it would not be what it is today without the input and feedback from all our community members, including the four neighborhood associations representing different areas of the City,” said Mayor Scott Newton. “We are extremely grateful to have been selected as a finalist in this year's awards, as it attests to our commitment to fostering an inclusive and welcoming Island City for all who live, work, and play here.”

This year’s entrants are being judged on innovative efforts to strengthen democracy locally.
