One man is dead, and his killer is on the loose after a brutal shooting in Wilton Manors. Wilton Manors Police Department (WMPD) and Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) are investigating Sunday evening’s shooting at 501 NW 28th Ct.

A 44-year-old man was found unresponsive when WMPD arrived at the scene. He was rushed to the hospital, but efforts to save his life were in vain. The victim was identified as Arland Cata.

WMPD Chief Gary Blocker said the department has increased patrols in the neighborhood and more.

“We are holding our patrol briefings on NW 28th Ct. to restore the sense of safety to the residents impacted. And we will continue to support them and our community at large, so they know that violent crime has no comfort here.”

The killing happened at a vacation rental. Although the vacation rental is licensed, it was cited in July for several code violations, one of which was the tenant running an illegal business before being shot.

Police said the owner was ambivalent.

“The responsible party declined to act, saying he was not responsible for this issue,” Blocker said. “You can bet we differed in opinion on that one.”

BSO is leading the investigation, and there is no suspect description. A source close to the investigation told OutSFL this appears to be an isolated incident and not an ongoing threat to the community.
