Exploring the vibrant world of LGBTQIA+ literature has always been a joy for me.
Engaging with authors who bring our community’s stories to life highlights the power of representation and the importance of celebrating diverse voices.
The author of Queer Power: Icons, Activists and Game Changers from Across the Rainbow has created a stunning tribute to our community, filled with bold visuals and inspiring narratives. Their passion for showcasing both well-known icons and hidden gems is truly admirable.
We had a chance to talk with them about the inspiration behind this colorful, empowering book and what readers can expect.
What was your inspiration behind your most recent book?
I've always been inspired by LGBQTIA+ stories and the way our community comes together so I wanted to put together a book that celebrated that. This is my love letter to my gorgeous rainbow community! My main focus was to represent a variety of activists, icons and game changers. I wanted well known names in there but also people that the reader could research on, read into and learn more about their journey. It really has been such an honour to create this book, I wanted it visually to feel like an illustrated Pride parade, and I think it does just that!
What does "Reading with Pride" mean to you?
"Reading with Pride" for me is about taking in and exploring the pages of books of LGBQTIA+ authors and illustrators. There is so much value in feeling 'seen' and there are so many amazing queer books out there for readers to discover so they too, can read with PRIDE.
Why do you feel representation of a variety of people is so important when it comes to writing books?
I think, especially with 'Queer Power!', I wanted to represent the community that is around me, people I work with and know and love. I think it's really important we highlight the voices and stories of queer people from all walks of the community. Representation is key, especially for younger readers growing up who are looking for icons that they can relate to.
Tell us a little more about the book and why you decided to write it.
'Queer Power!' brings together different LGBTQIA+ voices and shares their stories and why they're such icons! Each person has a double page spread, a bio and an illustration by me! I wanted to create a book that focused on queer icons that are existing now and the important work they're doing for our community.
What can fans expect from your book?
They can expect bold colours, lots of drag, animal print, disco balls and funnily enough.... fans! CLACK!
What's up next for you in the bookish world?
I don't think I'm allowed to say it yet but it's very exciting and something I've dreamed of doing for years. And yes, it's still very gay!
