Being an intermission host of a Miami Coral Gables-based silent reading party has been an amazing experience.
Leading readers during intermission at a variety of these events has cemented the fact that there is an interest when it comes to reading in South Florida, and there’s also a desire to make connections with others that share this interest.
Paola Mendez, leader of the silent reading movement, is excited about the future of the event, especially in 2025. As an occasional intermission host, I’m excited as well, and can promise South Florida readers that this is a fantastic experience for all.
We had a chance to talk to her about the event and inspiration behind the creation of this new literary experience.
What made you want to start a silent reading party event in South Florida?
I came across a TikTok called Reading Rhythm, and they were hosting parties in NYC where people would get together and read silently. They were calling it Reading Parties. I thought it was such a fun idea, and I wanted to go to a Reading Rhythm, but I wasn't planning on going to NYC anytime soon.
So, I asked my close friends who like to read if they'd show up if I hosted a reading party. I got a resounding yes! I hosted one reading party in the upstairs lounge of a restaurant. I spread the word about the event through my local blog and Instagram, Coral Gables Love. So, I decided to call it the Coral Gables Love Reading Party.
How has the event been received in South Florida, and why do you think it’s been so popular?
We've been selling out tickets to the CGL Reading Party. The idea was to get people who love books together and read. We live such hectic lives. Sometimes it's hard to find time to get some reading done. And then other times you must choose between being social and staying home and reading. You get to do both of those things at once!
What do you feel makes this event so special?
It's just lovely to be in a room surrounded by booklovers and sharing book recommendations, book events, and authors whose work we enjoy.
How does the event work, and what is its general schedule?
We have two reading sessions of 45 minutes each with a 30-minute intermission to meet other attendees, play trivia with book giveaways, and share what you're reading. Your ticket includes lite bites provided by the location for that specific silent reading party. It’s a lot of fun and a unique experience.
