A story about dealing with one’s differences and what it means to grow in a tough and at times cruel world, the manga "My Beautiful Man" is one that will capture the hearts of those that have ever felt misunderstood or as an outsider. A story about what it could mean to also find a glimmer of hope that could change one’s life yet be as confusing as it is a lesson in understanding oneself.
In the manga, we meet Hira. Hira is quiet, awkward, shy, and does not like any attention. Hira is the type of character that represents those of us that might find comfort in being an invisible part of social circles. Rather than deal with being bullied by his peers thanks to a stutter that has always defined him and has led him to feel lonely and insecure. On the other hand, there’s the character named Kiyoi. He is charismatic, good-looking, funny, and one that always captures the full attention of a room. Once Hira is asked and becomes the one that runs errands for Kiyoi’s group of friends, he finds himself drawn to Kiyoi. Hiro’s quiet nature is a completely different type of personality compared to Kiyoi’s, and Hiro’s interest becomes a deep fascination, one that Kioyi seems to ignore. A fascination that can easily translate into a crush, or into a wish to be more like him.
The manga’s tale is a deep study on what it means to find one’s true self-worth and of trying to distance oneself from inner and outer negative thoughts. And, how that is easier said than done.
The character of Hiro perfectly represents those that could wish for a different personality, life and at times, simply be someone else. Is this type of obsession with someone else true love, or simply a mirror into a world that Hiro would love to be a part of? A heartfelt story that explores unrequited love, self-worth, and the longing to be seen, is a tender story that offers a glimpse into Hira’s quiet world, a world that many of us have dealt with. A world that is silent, yet also a world where emotional struggle and confusion when it comes to one’s true and hopeful identity lives within.
Enhanced by gorgeous illustrations that you can feel as you see them, this is a beautiful addition to anyone’s shelf and one that brings joy and a bright light into issues that at times can be hard to navigate and teach.
