Sarah H. Cho wrote "Camgirl" based on a mental health episode she had, so she wanted to share her experience so others wouldn't feel so alone.
What was your inspiration behind "Camgirl?"
I wrote "Camgirl" based on a severe mental health episode that I experienced. I wanted to not only share my experience so that others would feel less alone, but also as a cathartic experience for myself. In addition, I was an Asian-American studies minor in college. One aspect that always shocked, fascinated, and angered me was the dangers of Asian fetishes. I thought this was the perfect story to platform this issue.
What does Reading Rainbow mean to you?
It means telling authentic stories unabashedly without censorship or apology. It's about creating art that celebrates our communities. It is the ultimate form of self-love.
Why do you feel representation of a variety of people is so important when it comes to writing books?
I feel it's important because entertainment – whether that's books, movies, or comics – is how we learn to process the world around us. It allows us, for a short time, to understand and experience the lives of those who may or may not look like us. And as a fun corporate bonus, it allows companies to tell fresh and engaging stories from perspectives they never have. DEI initiatives allow companies to find the most promising and talented artists that they may never have come across through their usual connections and relationships.
Tell us a little more about the book and why you decided to write it.
"Camgirl" tells the story of Dani – a down-on-her-luck camgirl who leans into Asian fetishes to pay her bills. Her online persona is obedient, shy, and demure. But, the real-life Dani couldn't be any more different. But, when an obsessive fan begins to stalk her in the real world...Dani must find a way to survive and a way back to who she really is.
What can fans expect from "Camgirl?"
Obviously, there's some sexy stuff in there. But, it's really a psychological thriller filled with a sense of dread and anxiety from start to end. And even more than that, it is a character study as we learn more and more about Dani, her past, and what makes her tick as the comic unfolds. Expect lots of twists and turns!
What's up next for you in the bookish world after "Camgirl?"
I'm currently working on some more comic book ideas. I'm also working on a short story anthology as well as a digital web series. I work in Film and TV, so look out for my name in the credits!
