"Bloodguard" by Cecy Robson.

Cecy Robson fell in love with the world of fantasy when she was a child, so one day she decided to write her own called, "Bloodguard."

What was your inspiration behind your most recent book?

When I was a child, I was pretty much adopted into an Irish family. They read me stories about fairies, and I just fell in love with the world of fantasy. I always knew that I would one day write and publish a high fantasy novel. Well, the time has arrived!

What does Reading Rainbow mean to you?

It means not being afraid to learn and set your imagination loose. I grew up in a very impoverished city. Many minorities would form prejudices within their own races. I read a lot, it was an escape from the violence around me. My brother warned me against reading in public. “If people keep seeing you with your face in a book, you’ll get beat up for being smart.”

Why do you feel representation of a variety of people is so important when it comes to writing books?

The world is a melting pot of people from different backgrounds. In representing a variety of people, you’re reinforcing this truth and demonstrating its normalcy and beauty.

Tell us a little more about the book and why you decided to write it.

Picture Middle Earth, except more violent and dangerous. Now, set the story within a gladiator arena. I love action. I love underdogs. And, I love torturing characters, so readers are unsure whether the hero will survive. I took these loves and added high-stakes and knew I had to write “Bloodguard.”

What can fans expect from your book?

Readers will be blown away by the action as well as stunned silent by all the twists and turns. No one can predict what will occur or how hard they will fall for Leith and Maeve. In short, expect the unexpected.

What's up next for you in the bookish world?

The next book in the series! I’m so excited. The working title is “Death Maiden.”
