Minnesota Rep. Angie Craig, Co-Chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus, is calling on President Joe Biden to drop out of the presidential campaign.
On July 6, Craig released a statement that she had lost confidence Biden could defeat Donald Trump in November’s election.
“President Biden is a good man and I appreciate his lifetime of service,” Craig said. “But I believe he should step aside for the next generation of leadership.”
The first out lesbian from Minnesota and the first lesbian mother to serve in Congress, Craig faces her own tough reelection campaign in Minnesota’s Second Congressional District. She said Biden’s debate performance compelled her to speak up.
“The stakes are too high,” she said.
Craig joins at least a half dozen other Democratic Representatives calling for Biden to step aside.
Elsewhere, Florida Sen. Shevrin Jones, the chairman of the Miami-Dade Democratic Party, is encouraging fellow Democrats to fall in line behind the president.
“You don’t abandon the person who has been there for us,” Jones said. “Joe Biden will be remembered as one of our best, most impactful presidents — a two-term president.”
Biden has refused calls for his withdrawal from the race, saying only party elites want him out. At 81, Biden is already the oldest president in U.S. history.
