In his third season with the Symphony of the Americas (SOTA), Maestro Pablo Mielgo has planned “a season of discovery ... music connecting the world, where styles and sounds intersect at YOUR Symphony of the Americas.”
SOTA opens its 2023-24 season at the Broward Center’s Amaturo Theater on Oct. 3 with “Curtains Up! The Music of John Williams.” Williams is the most Grammy and Academy Award-winning composer of all time, known for his iconic film scores, including “Star Wars,” “Jurassic Park,” “Superman,” “Raider’s of the Lost Ark,” “Schindler’s List,” “Harry Potter” and “E.T.”
Next up on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 is “Symphonic Fireworks: Beethoven’s Fifth,” and works by Sibelius and Liszt. According to Mielgo, Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony is a masterpiece of the classical era, “a triumph of human spirit and resilience and the world’s most recognizable symphonic work in history.”
Celebrate the sounds of the season with SOTA’s holiday tradition, “Holiday POPS!” on Dec. 3. Holiday traditions come together in this unforgettable musical program featuring a Symphony favorite, soprano soloist Kyaunnee Richardson.
On Jan. 9, Mielgo conducts the music of pioneering women composers, including Clara Schumann, a foremost piano virtuoso of the 19th century; Florence Price, the first Black woman recognized as a symphonic composer; and Jennifer Higdon, Grammy- and Pulitzer Prize-winner and a leading figure in contemporary classical music today. Soprano Lis Larsson is the featured soloist.
On April 8 and 9, the symphony presents a pops program, “Broadway – The Showstoppers!,” capturing these electrifying moments in American musical theater history. “Broadway stands as America’s truest art form and enduring legacy” and SOTA has planned a full program of iconic showtunes.
The season concludes on May 5 and 6 with “Symphonic Finale – Zuckerman and Brahms.” Guest artist Pinchas Zukerman, one of the greatest violinists of this generation, performs the Brahms double concerto with cellist Amanda Forsyth. The program also includes music by Debussy and Ravel.
