Dogged by allegations of sexual misconduct throughout his first term in office, Florida House Rep. Fabian Basabe is now the subject of an active investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
According to a report by the Miami Herald, police are investigating claims Basabe drugged and sexually assaulted a man at a party in Malibu, California in 2003. The man, who is straight, told police he decided to come forward with his story after learning Basabe had become an elected official and is accused of similar predatory behavior.
Basabe told the Herald that the allegations are “baseless” and “false.”
Since taking office following a narrow victory in 2022, Basabe has been accused of slapping one male aide and sexually harassing the same one, as well as an intern. An internal investigation by the Florida House of Representatives dismissed those charges.
House District 106 stretches the Atlantic coast from Miami Beach to Aventura. A former reality television actor and attorney, Basabe is touting endorsements from U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, former Miami Beach Mayor Matti Bower and the son of boxing champion George Foreman.
Democrat Joe Saunders, an out man, is challenging Basabe. Saunders, a former state rep. and FIU instructor, has not commented publicly on the latest allegations against Basabe.
