So many events, so little time.
South Florida is not only a destination for LGBTQ people, it’s also a destination for their money. Many nonprofits serve the community and depend on support from residents and visitors alike.
To that end, many hold their biggest fundraisers during “season,” which unofficially runs from Halloween through Easter. There is only so much money to go around and even fewer dates to hold events.
This weekend illustrates the problem in a nutshell. Palm Beach Pride is Saturday and Sunday in Lake Worth Beach. Annual galas for Latinos Salud and SunServe are Saturday night. These come two weeks after the Florida AIDS Walk and a week after the Gay Men’s Chorus performance at The Parker.
Meanwhile, Miami Beach Pride has events on Friday night and Saturday afternoon.
The events don’t exist in a vacuum, and each one affects the other.
AHF produces the AIDS Walk, and used to match donations made through the end of April. This year the cutoff is March 31, which prompted SunServe, an AIDS Walk beneficiary, to move its Shine gala to March. They avoided last weekend to avoid stepping on the Chorus’ event.
Meanwhile, Latinos Salud is also an AIDS Walk beneficiary, which means its event also needs to happen in March.
There doesn’t appear to be any scheduling malice. The Our Fund Foundation tries to keep an events calendar to help groups plan their events to maximize exposure and attendance. But OFF CEO David Jobin says things like this will happen.
“We can’t force people to enter their events. It’s unfortunate it happened. SunServe came out of the gate. There was confusion on which organization planted their flag first.”
The need for support is greater than ever, with the Trump and DeSantis administrations cutting funds for everything from HIV testing to the arts.
To quote Boy George: “In time, there could have been so much more, but time is precious I know.”
