Despite a last-minute buyer coming in to save the venue, the name is gone. Lips, the iconic Fort Lauderdale drag entertainment spot, is being renamed AquaPlex Fort Lauderdale.

New co-owner Jon Barrett confirmed to OutSFL that the location will be renamed to reflect their flagship property, AquaPlex Key West. He also says that major renovations are underway.

He hopes to keep the dinner theater venue open during the upgrades, but says there may be sporadic closures, depending on the construction situation and permit issues.

For now, the Lips Facebook page says “Pardon our dust… It’s just glitter!” They also advertise shows every Wednesday through Sunday.

Lips opened 17 years ago, and while the entertainers have always given their best, management has not. Past and present staff say they have essentially been running it themselves for years, and say management neglected upgrades and general maintenance.

Barrett and his partner bought AquaPlex in Key West last year, and when they heard about the opportunity to keep a legendary entertainment venue open, they jumped at the chance.

Once renovations are finished, Barrett says there will be a grand reopening/dedication.
