Fort Lauderdale may soon have to kiss Lips goodbye. After months of financial struggles, the iconic drag venue appears ready to close in South Florida.
OutSFL learned July 30 that the performers have been notified of the impending closure.
The franchise drastically reduced its marketing and advertising early this year.
While this may be a shock to the public, workers inside the venue say this has been a long time coming, saying it’s never recovered from the pandemic.
“We were basically running the place by ourselves,” one person said.
Adding to the pandemic problems, two of the owners died after the venue reopened.
Insiders say a sale has been in the works. One told OutSFL that the sale had fallen through, while another said there was still hope an investor would come in and save the day.
“The sale is still pending,” the person said. “I’m praying to god it will go through.”
For now, a feeling of uncertainty runs through the restaurant. As of July 30, a reliable but unofficial Facebook page was promoting the week ahead and encouraging people to make reservations.
No final closing date has been announced. As one person said, it could be a week, or it could be three.
