OutFAU editor Mary Rasura was named a finalist in three categories in the annual Sunshine State Awards including College Journalist of the Year for her work at OutSFL and Florida Atlantic University’s student newspaper, the University Press.
She’s also a finalist for Sports Story and General News Story.
Rasura has made headlines this year for launching OutFAU, a queer student newspaper on the campus of FAU. WPTV, WLRN and Best Colleges all profiled the newspaper and her earlier this year.
Additionally, Rasura became the first recipient of the Norm Kent LGBTQ Newsmaker Fund.
“I am very honored to receive this scholarship,” Rasura said at the time. “Starting OutFAU this year has been challenging and exciting. I’m thankful for the support to continue pursuing my education.”
Even though it just launched last semester, OutFAU has already won an award of its own, taking third place in the Apple awards at the College Media Association’s annual awards.
Currently, the publication is on hiatus during the summer. In the meantime, Rasura is hard at work planning out the four issues for the Fall semester.
“We’re very proud of Mary and all of her accomplishments,” said OutSFL Publisher Jason Parsley. “We wish her luck.”
The Sunshine State Awards honors the best in Florida journalism every year. The ceremony will take place Aug. 17 where the winners will be announced.
