OutSFL is proud to join nine other news organizations in an initiative with Trusting News, aimed at fostering transparency around the use of AI in journalism. Supported by a grant from the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, this initiative will explore the effectiveness of in-story AI disclosures in building audience trust.
We are excited to collaborate with the following newsrooms:
- Bay City News Foundation
- Correio Sabiá
- Gannett
- inewsource
- KXAN
- Nucleo Jornalismo
- SWI swissinfo.ch
- Verified News Network (VNN) Oklahoma
- WBEZ, Chicago Public Media
As part of this initiative, OutSFL will test public-facing AI disclosures within our stories. These disclosures will explain when and how AI tools have been used in our reporting, and will include surveys or other feedback mechanisms to gauge reader responses and improve transparency efforts.
As AI becomes more available and commonplace in our daily lives, it’s even more important to maintain clear and open communication about its role in content creation. This effort hopefully positions us at the forefront of AI transparency, an area of growing importance as newsrooms worldwide navigate the use of AI tools.
Through experimentation and collaboration with Trusting News and other leading outlets, we will help develop best practices for disclosing AI use in a way that is informative, builds trust, and benefits our readers.
Our participation builds on the findings of Trusting News’ first AI newsroom cohort, which surveyed audiences to understand their expectations surrounding AI in journalism. That research emphasized the importance of clear and honest communication about AI use, leading to the creation of the AI Trust Kit — a resource offering transparency recommendations, sample surveys, and guidance on audience engagement.
At OutSFL, we remain committed to maintaining a transparent relationship with our readers by adapting to the evolving landscape of news production while safeguarding journalistic integrity.
