The moment I stepped into the new location of Sra. Martinez, I felt an instant wave of nostalgia mixed with pure excitement.

James Beard Award-winning chef Michelle Bernstein and husband/partner David Martinez have brought back their iconic restaurant, originally opened in the Miami Design District in 2008, and now recently making its grand return in Coral Gables on Dec. 13.

The highly anticipated resurrection maintains its Spanish roots while infusing influences and flavors from the couple’s regional travels.

A Stunning First Impression

From the moment we were greeted at the entrance of the new Sra. Martinez, I knew we were in for something special. Located at 2325 Galiano Street, the space that once housed the Open Stage Club has been transformed into an elegant yet electric atmosphere. The warm lighting cast a golden glow over the modern yet rustic decor, a perfect blend of Spanish elegance and contemporary chic. Flamenco music hummed softly in the background, setting the mood for what would be an unforgettable night. The dim lighting added to the cozy and intimate ambiance, making it a perfect setting for a romantic evening. At times, live music fills the air, adding an extra layer of charm to the experience.

Immersed in the Ambiance

As we were led to our table, I took in every detail, from the exposed wood beams, the intricate Spanish tilework, the lively hum of conversation that filled the space. It felt like stepping into a luxurious Madrid eatery, where every guest was there for not just a meal, but an experience. And that was exactly what we got.

A Cocktail Extravaganza

We started with cocktails, and let me tell you, this place knows how to shake, stir, and pour magic into a glass. Sra. Martinez boasts an elevated cocktail program, featuring classic and signature handcrafted drinks. I opted for the Sra. Martinez cocktail, a gin-based delight with subtle sweetness manifested by Maraschino liqueur. My husband went for the Sangria Royale, a red wine, brandy, fresh fruit, and a touch of effervescence that turned an ordinary sangria into something truly regal.

Tapas That Transport You to Spain

Then came the food. Oh, the food! We couldn’t resist diving straight into the tapas selection. The Para Picar options, simple pleasures to enjoy with a drink, were a highlight. The gambas al ajillo arrived first, which was a perfectly plump shrimp bathed in garlicky olive oil with a touch of red pepper heat. We practically fought over the last bite, using crusty slices of Spanish bread to soak up every drop of that heavenly sauce.

Next came the croquetas de jamón, their golden-brown exteriors giving way to creamy, savory perfection inside. Every bite was like a warm, velvety hug. The pan con tomate, simple yet so vibrant with the ripest tomatoes and a drizzle of the best olive oil, transported us straight to the streets of Barcelona. And let’s not forget the patatas bravas — crispy, perfectly spiced, and paired with a smoky aioli that had us licking our fingers in the most sophisticated way possible.

A Main Course to Remember

For the main course, we knew we had to go for the paella. After all, this place had built its reputation on its perfectly executed Spanish rice dishes, and we were not about to miss out. When our paella de mariscos arrived, it was a sight to behold, featuring a stunning golden bed of saffron-infused rice, brimming with mussels, clams, shrimp, and tender calamari. The socarrat, that coveted crispy layer of rice at the bottom, was absolute perfection. Every forkful was a celebration of flavors, the rich seafood essence dancing with the smoky paprika and saffron.

The Ultimate Dessert and Cocktail Finale

By this point, we were beyond satisfied. But then, something truly spectacular happened. Our server returned with the dessert and cocktail finale, which was an over-the-top display of indulgence that left us speechless. The Torrejas Bread Pudding with dark chocolate and rum-soaked raisins was pure bliss, while the Labneh Ice Cream with tomato marmalade was a deliciously creative combination. The Carajillo, a blend of Licor 43 and espresso poured over ice, was the perfect way to round out the meal. We left feeling pampered, and it was so fun to try out everything sweet that the restaurant has to offer those who visit.

A Full-Circle Culinary Experience

Sra. Martinez’s return to Coral Gables is not just a reopening, it’s truly a full-circle moment for Chef Bernstein, whose first experience as a chef was at Redfish Grill in the area. She and David Martinez have created an experience that blends fine dining with a welcoming neighborhood atmosphere, where guests can unwind with friends and family.

Final Thoughts

As we stepped out into the night, our hearts (and stomachs) full, we couldn’t stop smiling. This wasn’t just a dinner; it was a celebration of flavor, culture, and the magic of a truly unforgettable dining experience. And something told me this wouldn’t be our last visit. Not by a long shot.
