Truth Wins Out Executive Director Wayne Besen recently released a new book, “Lies with a Straight Face: Exposing the Cranks and Cons Inside the ‘Ex-Gay’ Industry.”
“Wayne Besen has led the fight against ‘conversion therapy’ for decades – with considerable success,” said Andrew Tobias, former DNC Treasurer, in a press release. “This page-turner tells the tale.”
The release noted that the Supreme Court is considering whether to weigh-in on laws banning conversion therapy for minors, which makes this book even more relevant.
Truth Wins Out is an organization founded in 2006 that has fought against anti-gay religious extremism, especially the ex-gay movement.
“‘Lies with a Straight Face’ is a vital roadmap to stop the Religious Right’s insidious efforts to rebrand failed ‘ex-gay’ conversion programs,” Besen said in the release. “Matt Walsh’s cheerleading for conversion therapy, reminds us that the ‘Ex-Gay Big Lie’ is alive and must be actively refuted. My new book explains how conversion programs are fraudulent, ineffective and destroy peoples’ lives.”
The release notes that Walsh, a popular right wing talk show host, recently peddled the “ex-gay” message, saying, “There’s no reason why a person can’t seek and receive successful counseling to overcome same-sex attraction.”
Besen released his first book, “Anything But Straight: Unmasking the Scandals and Lies Behind the Ex-Gay Myth” in 2003. That book won two Lambda Literary awards and documented the history of conversion therapy programs from the early 20th century to 2002. His latest book, a sequel, examines the issue from 2003 to 2023.
All proceeds benefit Truth Wins Out (TruthWinsOut.org).
The book can be purchased on all major online retailers, like Amazon.
