YIPPI-KI-O-OY-VEY
Two worlds collide in “A Shonda” a musical about two men deeply in love in Memphis, Tennessee, opening July 10 at The Foundry. In the world premiere play, a young Orthodox Jewish man and a down-home country boy struggle to reconcile their relationship as their communities try to keep them apart by using religion and God as a wedge. Will Duvid leave his Orthodox community and his wife behind? Will Clay reject the bigotry that runs deep in his family? This is the first musical ever to explore these two worlds through the lens of a gay relationship. From the creators of the hit musicals “Now & Then,” “Come Out! Come Out!”, and “One More Yesterday” comes the world premiere of this brand-new musical. For more information or to purchase tickets go to playsofwilton.com.
PAPP SCHMEAR
He revolutionized theater as we know it today, and now Joseph Papp, born “Yosl Papirofsky,” will be the subject of a memorial/tribute concert on what would have been his 103rd birthday. “Celebrating Yosl – The Legacy of Joe Papp – A Musical Celebration” will be presented by YI Love Jewish, a division of Yiddishkayt Initiative. The event will be hosted by YI Founder Avi Hoffman, who was mentored by Papp in the 1980s. The concert event will feature live, virtual, and pre-recorded celebrity testimonials.
The creative force behind the New York Shakespeare Festival and the Joseph Papp Public Theatre (The Public), Papp's dynamic and innovative model for the development of new works led to the creation of such iconic productions as “Hair,” “A Chorus Line,” and “Runaways.” The evening will include Hoffman's recreation of “Joe Papp at the Ballroom,” a recounting, in Papp’s own words (based on transcripts, quotes, and material from the Papp Archives), of his Brooklyn Yiddish upbringing, his political struggles, and his reconceiving of the creative process. It all takes place on June 22 at West Boca Community Theatre, to purchase tickets go to tinyurl.com/3ze4jw89.
DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS
“Dissonance” is about two women who have been friends for twenty years and one difficult conversation. Written by and starring Marci J. Duncan and Kerry Sandell, it is the story of a Black woman and a White woman who have been friends for 20 years. They are godmothers to each other’s children but have never had a candid conversation about race…until now. As they open a cafe in a historically Black neighborhood, they uncover deeply held perceptions about race and must decide if being brutally honest and devastatingly vulnerable is worth the risk of their friendship’s potential end. Presented at Delray Beach Arts Garage on June 14. For more information and tickets go to artsgarage.org.
