NEW WORKS NEW VOICES
Many South Florida theater companies are giving unknown playwrights a chance to have their works heard before audiences. City Theatre in Miami is presenting readings of short plays mixed with live music by Hola Hi, followed by a community conversation led by Artistic Director Margaret M. Ledford on Oct. 10 at 6:30 p.m. and “Sips & Shorts” at Pinecrest Gardens, short plays that delve into the eerie, the suspenseful, and the wholly unpredictable on Oct. 13 at 5 p.m. at Books & Books in Coral Gables. Now in its fifth year of producing one-act plays by local playwrights, the Delray Beach Playhouse’s Festival of New Plays 2024, featuring 10 one-act plays by local playwrights, will be held on Oct. 19 and 20.
VIVA HISPANICA
The Norton Museum of Art will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with its free Nuestra Cultura Community Day, set for 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5. Expect to see plenty of art, along with opportunities to make your own art. There will be music, dancing and other fun for guests of all ages, and the restaurant will prepare food inspired by cuisines from across the Americas. Admission and parking are free. The Kravis Center presents The Miami Kids and The Maya, a documentary film by Victoria Alonso Noujaim, Thursday, Sept. 26 at 6:30 p.m. Follow the incredible journey of Victoria, a Venezuelan migrant, as she uncovers a powerful story of resilience, hope and cultural revival amidst the backdrop of the Guatemalan-Mayan genocide. Victoria’s path leads her to the heart of the Guatemalan Mayan Center and SALTT, a remarkable high school club dedicated to preserving Mayan heritage and supporting displaced families.

CARBONELL AWARDS ANNOUNCE NOMINEES FOR 2023-2024 SEASON
Gary Schweikhart, board president of the Carbonell Awards, South Florida’s theater and arts honors, announced the top six finalists in 20 competitive categories for the 2023-2024 theater season. A total of 89 professional productions at 29 theatres were evaluated by a diverse group of more than 40 judges representing all three participating counties (Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach). Ronnie Larsen Presents/Plays of Wilton! got three nominations. Island City Stage, Wilton Manor’s professional LGBT theater company was not nominated. The 47th Annual Carbonell Awards will be presented on Monday, Nov. 11, at 7:30 p.m. at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center.
