Island City Stage’s “A Delicate Balance” is a superb production — from the picture-perfect set design by Robert F. Wolin and the costumes by W. Emil White, to the set decorations, and Michael Leeds’ sharp and crisp direction.
Multi-award-winning Patti Gardner brings depth and character to Agnes who could easily be portrayed as a harridan. Tom Wahl’s portrayal of Tobias though was a bit of a sleeper. At first, I thought he was weak, but as the play went on, I saw it was his character who was ruled by his wife, and in the end, when Tobias develops some backbone, his character came alive, thanks to his sly portrayal.
Betty Ann Hunt Strain as Clair was a delight, although I kept wondering why she slipped into a southern dialect now and then.
Margery Lowe as Edna, Agnes’ best friend, and an icy WASP if ever there was one, sent shivers down my spine.
Sabrina Lynn Gore, an ICS veteran, and usually terrific in any role, is a bit out of sync with the other actors. Her levels never really match theirs.
I was curious why ICS chose to produce this play since it doesn’t appear to align with their mission of showcasing LGBTQ culture. But nevertheless it is a superb production especially if you’re a fan of classic theater pieces. Be warned though the show is three hours long so if you’re looking for something fast paced or new, this may not be your cup of instant coffee.
Runs through Feb. 9.
